May/June Newsletter

Dear Hastings Families,

Thank you for another fantastic year at Hastings Middle School. I am filled with mixed emotions as we say goodbye to our 8 th grade class and look forward to the next year.

This year our students have been exceptional both in the classroom and as they participated in various clubs and athletic activities. They really have looked “forward” as they strived to live up to our district’s vision Serve, Lead, and Succeed. None of this would be possible without a support system for our student made up of peers, staff, and most importantly the parents and guardians of Hastings. Thank you for all the little things each and every one of you did to make this school year a memorable one at HMS.

I would like to give a special thanks to our PTO executive committee (Cathy Pultz:  President, Ann Carmichael: President Elect, Jen Heck, Past-President; Melissa Ford & Denise Rush: co-Treasurers, Sherry Dean : Secretary) for their support and work throughout the school year. This year’s PTO gave back to Hastings through multiple teacher mini-grants, artist-in- residence program, and countless volunteer hours especially during our one-to- one laptop role out. I want to extend a big thank you to all of our PTO committee chairs for organizing student events that added to our learning environment.

Finally, congratulations to our retiring staff member: Custodian Luke Parker. His contributions to keeping our building running in an efficient way over the course of his careers will not be soon forgotten.

I know I speak for all of us when I say that I wish him well in his retirement.

As this year comes to a close, I cannot help but look forward to the first day of classes for the 2016-2017 school year on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Until then, enjoy your summer break.

Message from Assistant Principal Jim Buffer

Another school year winds to a close! It is hard to believe that we are getting ready to wish our 8 th graders continued success at the high school, and that we are just months away from welcoming a new group of 6 th graders to HMS. Best wishes to all of our students and their families for a wonderful summer!

The 2016-2017 school year will be here before we know it. If questions arise over the summer, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 487-5103, or by e-mail at jbuffer@uaschools.org.

Notes and News

Hoops for a Cure: Hastings and Jones Middle Schools came together to fight cancer with their annual cross-district basketball game. This year marked the nine year anniversary of the "Two Schools, One Cause" game. Together, the schools raised $15,000 for cancer research, which was donated to Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

The game was briefly interrupted for a flash mob dancing to "Fireworks."

This year's game was played in honor of Beth Gehring Flory, a former Hastings Middle School science teacher who lost her 13 year battle with cancer in February of this year. Thank you to everyone who attended the game.

Last Day: Friday, May 27th

We will dismiss by grade levels. Students unable to travel home at these dismissal times will be supervised in the gym until regularly scheduled buses arrive at 3:20 p.m. • The 8th grade will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m. to return at 3:30 p.m. for the Recognition Program (see information below) • The 7th grade will be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. • The 6th grade will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m.

Eighth Grade Recognition Program

The 8th Grade Recognition Program will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Hastings Auditorium. Students will attend morning classes and eat lunch as usual. Beginning 7th period, the students will assemble in the auditorium to practice. At 1:45 p.m., they will then be dismissed to go home and prepare for the Recognition Program. Attire for the Recognition Program is dressy; students should follow DC Arlington National Cemetery dress guidelines. Upon returning to school at 3:30 p.m., students will assemble in the science hallway in preparation for the Recognition Program while parents are seated in the auditorium. There will be a brief reception following the program.

August 8 7th and 8th graders, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. 6th graders, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. Two great options to conveniently purchase all of next year’s school supplies AND support the organization that supports our students and teachers all year long: 1. You can order your supplies online and have them packaged and ready for pick-up at the Hastings Supply Sale in August*; 2. Don’t need all the supplies on the supply list? Attend the sale on August 8 and buy just the supplies that you need.

*The only supplies that will NOT be included in the pre-packaged bags will be calculators and the global language and music binders. Remember: PE classes require black shorts and white/gray t-shirts. These and other "spirit wear" items will be available at the sale.. And, of course, August 8 is also the day to: Get your class schedules! Have your school photo taken! Deposit to your debit account! Catch up with your friends!!! Check the Hastings website mid-summer to see the complete supply list online and more information about the sale.

Help, Help, Help!! We need lots of volunteers to make the sale run smoothly! If you are able to help on the sale day or before the sale to help fill orders, please email Anne Carmichael at anncarmichael2@gmail.com.

High school students can earn their summer service hours!

Community Service Hours

Congratulations to the Hastings students!  Over the course of this school year Hastings students completed over 11,000 hours of community service.

Community service hours support the mission of the Upper Arlington School District by engaging students in meaningful volunteer opportunities which enrich the learning experience while teaching civic responsibility and strengthening communities. Our vision is to develop uniquely accomplished students prepared to SERVE, lead, and succeed.  Community service helps students take skills they have learned in the classroom outside their classroom walls.  Being involved in their communities and serving others provides students a sense of purpose and helps students make informed decisions about possible career exploration pathways.  Community service challenges students to engage in meaningful authentic learning experiences which will further help prepare them to serve, lead, and succeed.

At Hastings we encourage all students to complete ten hours of community service each year. If your child performs any community service hours this summer, they can go ahead and log them into the x2vol account through their naviance.com account.  Their x2vol accounts will become active for 2016-2017 as of June 1st.  The directions for logging onto this website are on the Hastings website under the Student Resources tab.  If they have any difficulties, just have them keep track of the time and see Mrs. Shapiro in the fall for help.
All new sixth graders should simply track any community service hours they perform.  We will help them log into their accounts once the school year started.
