March
18, 2009 - From Mrs. Flowers: Fifth graders
dissected cow eyeballs! Students learned the parts
of the eye, how they work, and how to protect
them.
On the retina of many animals, including cows,
there is a layer called the tapetum which reflects
light and makes them seem to glow at night. The
vitreous humor, which is a jelly like substance,
gives the eye its shape. |

MRS. FLOWERS' FIFTH GRADE
CLASS |
| March
13 , 2009: This March, all the Windermere
fifth graders explored electrical energy by using
Snap Circuits. They demonstrated how to illuminate
a light and the difference between a series and
parallel circuit.
Before spring break, fifth grade students created
3-D visual representations of different birdcalls
as part of their sound energy unit. They incorporated
pitch, duration and even volume of individual
calls.
Along with the unit on sound, students created
"telephones" using cups and different
materials with which to connect them. They also
had to carefully record their observations so
another group could duplicate their experiment.

11, 2009: As part of our Ecosystem unit, we
went to Highbanks Metro Park this fall. We completed
stream water quality testing, played food web
games, and took digital photographs of things
that were detrimental, beneficial, and neutral
to the environment. |

FLOWERS' STUDENTS VISIT BIZ
TOWN |
| As
a culminating activity for our economics unit,
we visited JA Biz Town. Each student interviewed
for a job and "worked" at one of 14
businesses during the day. The kids put what they
learned about supply, demand and pricing to good
use while trying to pay off their business loans
from the bank. |
