~Frequently Asked Questions~
WHERE DO I START WHEN MY CHILD HAS A PROBLEM AT SCHOOL?
The best place to begin for daily classroom issues is with your child's teacher who is likely to have the most information about the problem. Starting with the teacher also demonstrates your respect. Bypassing the teacher will make it difficult for the principal to address your concerns.
WHEN A PROBLEM COMES UP, HOW SHOULD I DEAL WITH THE SCHOOL?
Teachers and administrators understand that their actions are occasionally met with initial response of frustration by parents. Try to keep an open mind, determine the facts, and write them down. You will then be in a better position to discuss clearly what you see as the issue to be resolved. It is our goal to solve issues and to collaborate in a positive way.
WHEN I WANT TO REPORT A PROBLEM, SHOULD I USE MY NAME?
Parents often express that their child will suffer retribution at school if his or her name is associated with a complaint. On the contrary, teachers and administrators appreciate when you present your concerns in a way that shows you are willing to solve problems, and they will assure you that retribution is not tolerated. Giving your name lends credibility to your complaint and allows for follow-up to ensure that the complaint has been investigated and resolved.
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT A TEACHER ABOUT A PROBLEM?
Let the teacher know by phone or email or in person that you have a problem you wish to discuss. It's a good idea to have prepared notes, including questions to be asked, clarifications to be sought, and points to be made. To avoid future problems or misunderstandings, it is wise to write down any agreements resulting from the meeting.
