Chess Club
"Chess is a great game for training the thinking process of students.  It is the mental karate that strengthens calculation, extends cognitive flexibility, nurtures emotional maturity, and cultivates good sportsmanship." Professor Ning Quan, OSU University. Chess Club is for any interested 6th, 7th and 8th grade student.

Class Officers
A president, vice president, secretary and treasurer represent all three classes.  The student's classmates vote on the positions.  The officers plan grade level socials, do fundraisers, and act as a liaison between the student body and the administration.

Computer Club (http)
HTTP (Hastings Technology Team Partners) is a group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who are involved with technology including computers, scanners, digital cameras and camcorders. All students are trained to work with Hastings staff members. Staff members select times during the month when HTTP members can come into their rooms and complete various tasks. These activities include cleaning the computers, rebuilding desktops, answering computer, scanner and digital camera questions, and helping staff learn new applications.

Drama Club

Fall drama production (play), winter musical and spring Talent Show are all part of the Drama Club.  All students may audition for each production.  The productions are seasonal and will require after school rehearsals.

French Club

The purpose of French Club is to further students' understanding and appreciation of the French culture. Students will also have opportunities to practice the language through parties, games, sampling of French foods, and activities centered on holidays in French-speaking countries.   Any 7th or 8th grader who is enrolled in French classes is eligible.

Geography Bee

Students have the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society.  Social Studies teachers in each grade level conduct the preliminary rounds of the competition to determine three representatives to appear in the Hastings Geographic Bee. Students answer a variety of questions related to world geography, economics, history, culture, and current events.  Map skills are used in certain phases of the competition as well. The early rounds are conducted in a fun yet educational atmosphere, and students are not eliminated until they miss two questions.   The final Hastings Geographic Bee competition is held in winter, and the student who wins the contest must qualify to appear in the state finals later in the year.  Hastings has a strong history of qualifying for the Ohio Geographic Bee.

Intramural Morning Basketball

The Hastings gym will be open from 7-8 am every Tuesday and Thursday morning for pick-up basketball games. These games are for both boys and girls in grades 6,7, or 8 who just want to have fun playing basketball. Gym shoes must be worn.

Math Counts

Students meet weekly to practice math problems designed by the National Math Counts Organization. Select students will form teams in January and compete at Columbus State Community College in February.  All Hastings students with an interest in math and solving problems with others are eligible.  Meetings will be every Thursday from 12:24-1:04 pm in Room 103.

Power of the Pen

Power of the Pen members meet to practice writing in timed situations in response to a given prompt. Six students, along with several alternates, are selected at both grade levels to meet and compete in the district, regional and state tournaments.  All 7th and 8th grade Hastings students are eligible.  Meetings are November to June; one day a week during lunch; Room 106 with Mrs. Miller on Thursday. SAW

SAW stands for Scientists At Work.  Students meet on Monday's from 3:30-4:40.  Any 7th and 8th grader who is interested in developing a project for Science Fair or who is interested in science is welcome to attend.

Service Club

Service Club is a program offered to all Hastings Middle School students who are willing to volunteer their time for various service projects throughout the year. Students help create a list of projects that they will organize, promote, implement, and take part in during the school year.  Service Club meets on the second Thursday of the month in Room 105 from 3:30-4:30.

Ski Club
Hastings Ski Club is available to students in all grades.  The Ski Club travels to Mad River Mountain in Bellefontaine, Ohio for six Friday evenings in December, January and February.  We take charter buses to the resort.  Students may ski, snowboard or both and are provided lessons by the Mad River Mountain staff. Parent chaperones are always needed and will be arranged by the advisor.

Spanish Club

All Spanish students at Hastings in grades 6-8 are welcome to participate in Spanish Club.  Activities include fiestas, cultural activities, restaurants, celebrations, etc.  Students meet throughout the year after school in Room 211.

Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee practices begin in January.  Practices are optional, but students are encouraged to attend as many as possible to prepare for the Hastings Spelling Bee on Wednesday, February 4th, at 3:30 p.m. Parents may attend the Hastings Bee.  The top four finishers at Hastings will compete in the Upper Arlington District Spelling Bee.

Student Ambassodors Council

All three class levels may have one to two ambassadors from each advisory.  The ambassadors work with the class officers on planning activities and sharing information with students in their advisories.

Student Mentors

Students interact with Ms. Hemmelgarn’s students and help with a variety of activities.  All Hastings students are welcome to come during FLEX in Room 219.

Study Table

Study Table is a concentrated work time lasting from 3:30 until 4:30 Monday through Thursday.  During study table, students are expected to work on homework or other school projects under the supervision of classroom teachers. These teachers are able to help students in all subjects, but if there is a specific question, students will be allowed to see their subject teacher.  Students are encouraged to bring snacks and ipods/cd players as long as they are considerate of the students around them and the room that they are in.

Youth to Youth

Youth to Youth is an activity group open to any 6th, 7th and 8th grader who lives a drug-free life. The group meets during flex once a month. Students enjoy popcorn and movies, decorating cookies, and planning various lunch activities such as a Valentine Party. Select seventh graders are invited go to Winner’s Choice Camp during November.

Yearbook Staff

The yearbook staff photographs and accumulates activities throughout the school year. They design and physically assimilate the yearbook for the school.
Club activities include coordinating a sales campaign, cover selection, training for software on computers, photography, coordinating picture/name identification, writing, editing and book distribution.  Any student who completes an application by the due date is eligible to join the staff.
