Pat Mora

What is your connection to Ohio?

I lived in Cincinnati for seven of the years between 1989 and 1998. I was born in El Paso, Texas, and came to Ohio because my husband teaches at the University of Cincinnati.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I am a writer because I am a reader. Often when a person loves to read, she sometimes thinks: I'd like to write a book too.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

Reading plenty of books is helpful to writers and illustrators of all ages. It's also helpful to notice the world around you. Be a good observer and a good listener. What are the kinds of trees in your neighborhood? What are your great-grandparents' names and where were they born?

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to laugh and visit with my family, and to cook, garden, travel, read and visit museums.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Love to mamá : a tribute to mothers (2001)
  • The rainbow tulip (1999)
  • This big sky (1998)
  • House of houses (1997)
  • Tomás and the library lady (1997)
  • Confetti : poems for children (1996)
  • Uno, dos, tres = One, two, three (1996)
  • A birthday basket for Tía (1992)
  • The desert is my mother = El desierto es mi madre (1994)
  • Listen to the desert = Oye al desierto (1994)
  • Pablo's tree (1994)
  • Nepantla : essays from the land in the middle (1993)
