Angela Johnson

What is your connection to Ohio?

I've lived in Ohio for most of my life. Most of my immediate family lives here as does my heart.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I've been writing since I was in third grade. I knew then that I wanted to be a writer when my third grade teacher read me and my class Harriet the Spy. I wanted to tell stories like that.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

The most important thing a young writer can do is read. Read anything and everything.

What do you like to do for fun?

For fun I travel, garden and hang out with friends.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Heaven (1998)
  • Toning the sweep (1993)
  • When I am old with you (1990)
  • Julius (1993)
  • Tell me a story, Mama (1989)
  • The other side : Shorter poems (1998)
  • One of three (1991)
  • The leaving morning (1992)
  • Do like Kyla (1990)
  • Songs of faith (1998)
