What is your connection to Ohio?

I was born in Columbus and spent my child hood in Westerville, Ohio. I attended Columbus College of Art and Design and then moved to Athens, Ohio with my husband. We lived in an old farmhouse with our two children and moved back to Columbus in 1992 to be closer to our families.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I loved fairy tales when I was a child and spent hours in my library studying old classic fairy tale illustrations. I would then draw my own versions of the story. I always knew I wanted to draw for a living because I could create my own fantasy world.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

Turn off the TV and draw every day.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to draw, read, and garden, spend time in the woods, and hang out with kids.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Go Plants! (2001)
  • Blizzard (2001)
  • Firefly Night (2000)
  • Artic Dreams (1999)
  • Hush! a Gaelic Lullaby (1997)
  • Fifth Grade Crush (1986)
  • Peanut Butter for Dinner Again? (1985)
