What is your connection to Ohio?

My connection to Ohio is that I was born there, in Cincinnati. My first home was in Wilmington where my father was attending college on the GI Bill. From there we moved to Red Lion and then to Harveysburg where I started school. The last place I lived was Blanchester, where my grandfather Joe Putman was principal of the elementary school, later named for him. At the age of eleven I moved to California, but I still have a grandmother, aunts, uncles and many cousins in Ohio.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

As a child I loved drawing pictures. One day I was looking at a book, the Little Golden Book version of Heidi, and realized that someone must have the job of making pictures and stories in books for boys and girls. I decided I wanted that job. The only other thing I ever wanted to be ìwhen I grew up was a mother. Luckily I have gotten to be both, and now a grandmother.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

I think it is important for each person to follow their own dreams. If those dreams happen to be to write or illustrate, then my advice is to pay attention to life, to people, to feelings, to details, to anything that has an emotional impact, to anything that is interesting to you. Practice writing and drawing. Learn as much as you can. Read lots of books and look at the pictures. Which ones do you like and why? Donít ever give up your dream. Work hard to make it come true.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to be with my family, especially my two grandchildren. I like to garden and sew and visit with friends. I have fun doing my work, too.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Whistling (2003)
  • My Grandmother Is Coming to Town (2003)
  • Which Hat is That? (2002)
  • William's Turn (2001)
  • Pieces: A Year in Poems and Quilts (2001)
  • Whose Shoes? (2001)
  • Got You! (2001)
  • Soup's Oops! (2000)
  • What Can You Do in the Snow? (2000)
  • Bean Soup (2000)
  • Soup Too? (2000)
  • Not Without Bear (2000)
  • What Can You Do in the Wind? (2000)
