Janet Hickman What is your connection to Ohio? I was born in Ohio (Delaware County), came to Columbus to attend Ohio State, and never left. My husband and I have lived in the same house in Clintonville for more than 35 years. What inspired you to become an author or illustrator? When I was young, I wanted to write stories because reading gave me such pleasure. Writing seemed a way to be even more deeply involved than reading. I didn't think seriously about being an author--writing for publication--until I was almost an adult. In college, I was lucky to have teachers who encouraged me; later on I met some authors who were an inspiration to me (Madeleine L'Engle, for one). What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator? Read, read, read. Be curious about things. Welcome new experiences. Try not to be impatient if your writing doesn't come out the way you want it the first time. What do you like to do for fun? I like to visit with family and friends. Grandchildren are very high on my list. I still love to read, of course. And when I have time, I like to poke around historical sites in the hope of finding a good story idea. Some of your most popular books are:
