What is your connection to Ohio?

I was born in Neffs, Ohio a small mining community in southeastern Ohio. I have lived in Ohio all of my life. I moved from coal country over 40 years ago and now reside in Portage County in Brimfield Township.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

It was collectively my family and where I grew up that were the impetus for my books. I knew a childhood without television so I learned history through rich storytelling provided by my parents and townpeople. Though we were poor materially, there was always a feeling of importance of who we were and what we were about. As I grew older, I realized that I had to preserve at least a little part of that history.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

Read many books - all sorts of books. Be open to new experiences. Keep a journal. I wish that I had. Write about what you know and do it often.

What do you like to do for fun?

Living is fun. I like to read, play the piano, hike with my husband and my dog, visit my family, work in my garden, attend concerts. I don't have fun doing nothing!

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Up the Tracks to Grandma's (1993)
  • In Coal Country (1992)
