What is your connection to Ohio?

I was born in Washington Court House, Ohio, and grew up on a farm nearby. I also went to college in Ohio (at Miami University). Although I have moved around a lot as an adult--living, at various points, in Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania--my husband and kids and I moved back to Ohio in 1998, and I now live on the northwest side of Columbus.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I think I was probably most inspired by all the great books I've read and loved. I also got a lot of encouragement from teachers and professors, all the way through school.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

I would advise them most of all to enjoy writing--to use their imagination to explore interesting situations and ideas, and to have fun playing with different words, different sentence structures, etc. to best express their thoughts. I would also advise them not to become discouraged, because even professional writers constantly have to revise and improve their work.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to read and write. I enjoy traveling a lot. I also like bicycling and swimming. Most of all, I like hanging out with my family.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Say What? (2004)
  • Aunt Memory (2003)
  • Among the Barons (2003)
  • Among the Betrayed (2002)
  • Among the Imposters (2002)
  • Because of Anya (2002)
  • Turnabout (2002)
  • Among the Hidden (2001)
  • The Girl with 500 Middle Names (2001)
  • Just Ella (1999)
