Carole Gerber

What is your connection to Ohio?

My connection to Ohio is that I was born and raised in Cincinnati, and hold two degrees from The Ohio State University. I have lived in Ohio most of my life, except for several years as a young adult, when I lived in Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Oregon and a couple of years during my childhood when I lived in Florida.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

What inspired me: I had a wonderful creative writing teacher at Princeton High School in Cincinnati named John Engle. He was and continues to be my inspiration. We have kept in touch all these years; he now lives in Xenia. I visited him last month. He is a wonderful poet and teacher who continues to write and publish.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

My advice: Revise, revise, revise! And don't be super-sensitive about suggestions your teacher or other writers make about ways you can improve what you have written. Always be open to advice from others, but at the same time be your own best critic and do what seems right to you.

What do you like to do for fun?

I take a yoga class in a hot yoga studio a couple of times a week. I walk three miles every morning before I drive to my office. I belong to two book discussion groups and enjoy lunching with my friends and discussing what we have read. I love to garden and keep remaking the big flower garden in my back yard. I love, love, love to travel and am planning a trip to Australia this spring with my husband, Mark, and daughter, Jess.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Blizzard (2001)
  • Firefly Night (2000)
  • Arctic Dreams (1999)
  • Hush! a Gaelic Lullaby (1997)
