Timothy R. Gaffney

What is your connection to Ohio?

Born in Dayton, resident most of my life. I graduated from Ohio State U. in 1974 with a BA in journalism. I'm a staff writer for the Dayton Daily News.

What inspired you to become an author?

I have always had an interest in writing. I like to do other kinds of writing besides newspaper stories, so I have written many magazine articles and several books. Some of my books include my own photographs.

I became interested in writing for children because my wife, Jean, is a children's librarian. She encouraged me to begin writing children's books.

What advice do you have for a young author?

The best way to become a writer -- the only way -- is to write. Don't worry about thinking of things to write about -- keep a journal and write about whatever you did today. Write letters to friends. Write stories for the fun of it.

What do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy backpacking, photography and flying. I'm a private pilot and I'm building an airplane (yes, a real one!) in my garage.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Secret Spy Satellites (2000)
  • Air Safety (1999)
  • Back in Orbit (1998)
  • Grandpa Takes Me To the Moon (1996)
  • Edmund Hillary: First To Climb Mount Everest (1990)
  • Chuck Yeager (1986)
  • Kennedy Space Center (1985)
