What is your connection to Ohio?

I was born in Cleveland, I now live in Cincinnati, and I have lived in Ohio my whole life.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

My students, some of whom didn't like to read the assigned texts. I wanted to write something that young people could read that would be contemporary and exciting, yet have a solid literacy base for teachers to use.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

Read all you can, then write all you feel. Reading adds input and background. Writing is the output and the expression. Write all the time. Keep a notebook with you. When the thought comes, write it down.

What do you like to do for fun?

For fun, I write! Really!

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Forged by fire (1997)
  • Tears of a tiger (1994)
  • Romiette and Julio (1999)
  • Before the dawn (2001)
  • Double Dutch (2002)
  • Not quite burned out but crispy around the edges : inspiration, laughter, and encouragement for teachers (2001)
  • Ziggy and the black dinosaurs : lost in the tunnel of time (1996)
  • Teaching from the heart : reflections, encouragement, and inspiration (2000)
  • Darkness before dawn (2001)
  • Shadows of Caesar's Creek (1997)
