What is your connection to Ohio?

I was born in Cleveland,Ohio, and lived there until I was twenty-eight. I also graduated from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I am not sure what inspired me to become an author--perhaps a love of reading and a family tradition of story telling.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

As for advice for a young author: read a lot and write a lot. Experiment with short pieces in all styles. Have fun with it.

What do you like to do for fun?

Aside from writing, I enjoy reading, hiking, kayaking, swimming and theater.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Walk two moons (1994)
  • The Wanderer (2000)
  • Chasing Redbird (1997)
  • Love that dog (2001)
  • A fine, fine school (2001)
  • Bloomability (1998)
  • Ruby Holler (2002)
  • Pleasing the ghost (1996)
  • Fishing in the air (2000)
  • Absolutely normal chaos (1997)
