John Becker

What is your connection to Ohio?

I grew up in Cleveland, received all three of my degrees, Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, worked for several years at the Columbus Zoo, and now live and write in Delaware, Ohio.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I have always loved to write ever since I was a kid, but when my kids were young and I would read to them, I thought that it would be neat to write stories that would enlighten and entertain kids.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

The best advice I could give to a young writer would be to learn all you can about the craft of writing by reading the stories written by good writers.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to read, ice skate (I played hockey at Ohio State), play tennis, and go hiking in the woods.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Florida panther (2004)
  • The North American bison (2003)
  • Manatees (2003)
  • Wild turkeys (2003)
  • The bald eagle (2002)
  • The North American beaver (2002)
  • North American river otters (2002)
