Natalie Babbitt

What is your connection to Ohio?

I was born and raised in Ohio - in a number of different towns. Nearly all of my ancestors came to Ohio before the American Revolution. My father's maternal grandmother was a Zane.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I decided I wanted to be a children's book illustrator when I was in the fourth grade. My mother was an amateur landscape and portrait painter and she game me a lot of help.

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

Authors learn how to write mainly by reading. And illustrators must love to draw enough to do it every day.

What do you like to do for fun?

I spend a lot of time doing word games and puzzles of various kinds.

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Tuck everlasting ( 2002,1975)
  • Elsie times eight (2001)
  • Ouch! a tale from Grimm (1998)
  • The search for delicious (1999, 1969)
  • The eyes of the Amaryllis (1998, 1977)
