What is your connection to Ohio?

I grew up in Ohio. Lived in Yellow Springs until I moved to New York City in 1990. My father, Arnold Adoff still lives in Yellow Springs. My Mother, Virginia Hamilton was born right down the field from the house I grew up in. She lived most of her life in Yellow Springs, she died of breast cancer on February 19th, 2002. Her family has lived in Ohio for generations.

What inspired you to become an author?

After years of being a musician, and having my own band in NYC, I decided to change course and do something different. I had grown tired of playing clubs, and the rock N roll life. I had a strong desire to do something positive for kids. To do something in the creative field that would impact the lives of children and teens. I began writing just for myself, then slowly started to share it with others. Before I knew it, I had sold 2 books! I currently have 5 books under contract for kid's of varying ages. The Song Shoots Out of My Mouth: A Celebration of Music was my first published work. My first YA novel, Names will never hurt me will be published in April of 2004.

What advice do you have for a young author?

WRITE, WRITE, WRITE. Try to develop your own style. Don't copy what other people do. Try to translate your emotions into words, and let it grow from there. And as my Mother always told me "You have to dig deep!"

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to go to the movies, go out to eat, run in Central Park, and hang out with my wife Mary Ann and our friends!!

Some of your most popular books are:

  • The song shoots out of my mouth: A celebration of music (2002)
  • Names will never hurt me (2004)
