Karen Ackerman

What is your connection to Ohio?

My "connection" to Ohio is that I was born here, and I still live here, barely five miles from where I was raised! Ohio suits me fine.

What inspired you to become an author or illustrator?

I was never really "inspired" to become an author -- I ALWAYS had a tale to tell or write. Mom encouraged me until I began writing on the WALLS -- then steered me toward PAPER!

What advice do you have for a young author or illustrator?

My advice to young authors is to not "give up" due to rejections. (Sometimes you're the pigeon; & sometimes you're the statue!) The important thing is to keep writing.

What do you like to do for fun?

READ, of course!

Some of your most popular books are:

  • Song and dance man (1998)
  • Leaves in October (1991)
  • Night crossing (1994)
  • By the dawn's early light (1994)
  • Araminta's paint box (1990)
  • The tin heart (1990)
  • The sleeping porch (1995)
