Take a look at the Summer Reading List for 2008.  Ninth graders will read Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher.  It’s a compelling story and such down-to-earth characters.  Crutcher will be our visiting author in September.  Check out the New Books link for more books by Crutcher.

A May 2, 2008, New York Times op-ed by David Brooks entitled “The Cognitive Age” caught our attention because of its application to research in the 21st century.  The “scooping and smushing” (Jaime McKenzie), “cutting and pasting” topical research isn’t what employers will be looking for in our graduates.  Brooks refers to what is happening as the “skills revolution.”  Brooks claims that “We’re
moving into a more demanding cognitive age. In order to thrive, people are compelled to become better at absorbing, processing and combining information.”  He comments further that the “most important part of information’s journey is the last few inches — the space between a person’s eyes or ears and the various regions of the brain. Does the individual have the capacity to understand the information? Does he or she have the training to exploit it? Are there cultural assumptions that distort the way it is perceived?”  Read the entire article by going to http://www.nytimes.com and typing in “cognitive age” in the search line.

Continue to read the “Favorite UAHS Authors” link through PageFlakes.  Look for more exciting news about your favorite authors such as Stephenie Meyer, Sarah Dessen, and more through their RSS feeds.
